Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park derives its name from the Tarangire River arises in the highlands of central Tanzania and winds its way through the game sanctuary.

In the dry season the Tarangire River irresistibly lures the herds of plane animals in the parched surrounding areas to its shrunken but permanent brackish waters.

The animals come by the thousands from as far north as the shores of Lake Natron and dramatically swelling the resident population with wildebeest, zebra eland, elephant, hartebeest, buffalo and fringe eared Oryx. As the rainless days continue the pools of the Tarangire National Park are clotted with thirsty migrants and elephants begin to dig for underground streams in the dry river bed. At this time of year the concentration of the animals rivals that of the Serengeti to the northwest

The animals share the permanent pools with flocks of the Tarangire National Park’s diverse bird population: greenwood hoopoes, fisher’s lovebirds, white-bellied go away birds, hornbills, cuckoos and giant water birds like the Goliath heron, Egyptian goose and giant kingfisher.

Flora & Fauna In Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park is a great wildlife viewing destination, during the dry season the Tarangire River attracts wildlife from within the ecosystem – the Tarangire ecosystem is nearly 13 times the real size of this park!

Tarangire always has and always will be famous for elephants – you are guaranteed to see in the park. Tarangire holds the record for the oldest recorded elephant birth and recently one elephant in Tarangire had twins that they raised until adulthood.

Home to over 600 species of birds, keen ornithologists are treated a great introduction to the country’s birdlife. Most of the birdlife understandably is near the river and the reason for the large number of species is the swampy areas which are green throughout the year and provide a breeding area for all the bird species.  Tarangire also has a lot of species as it overlaps two ranges the north eastern and north western areas – combining both ranges such as the pied babbler plus the guineafowl.
